When we started thinking of topics and ideas for our collaborative project we all had to bring in outside sources on whatever we thought was interesting. One thing that was present in each on of our research was the idea of abuse. We found a lot of controversial information to do with abuse and not just physical. We researched mental, drug, rape, and self abuse as categories in our topic. However we don't just want to display that 'abuse is bad', we want to show the different views such as the rapist and the raped. We wanted to show there's more then just black and white to some stories as well as break the stereotypical 'man beats woman' and show the untold stories of abused men. One piece of research which I found to have a heavy influence on our work is Lady GaGa's song "It Could Happen to You". This song shows the background stories of collage girls who were raped in different ways. It displays this by letting the viewer look in to their private dorm rooms and in our performance we would like to show the behind scenes of what abuse actually can do and what it actually is.
We have also looked up stories of rape and abuse from multiple views such as a bystander, the abused and the abuser. We've payed attention to how the abusers think and their thought process behind why they did what they did. We hope to bring information to the audience that they don't know. It interesting to explore characters that one would find repulsive. It's thrilling to push boundaries and jump over obstacles that are ever present when talking about such a controversial topic. We would like to portray to the audience the subjects that one would find disturbing or one would avoid because of the uncomfortable feeling that comes with this. We wants the audience to feel uncomfortable because that's the only way for them to feel and understand the topic than just presenting a good piece that they would enjoy. By pulling this comfort out of our portrayal we open up the viewers to our ideas and information behind our three abuses; physical, drug and rape.
