Day 1 ISSEA drama
I was really nervous at first meeting new people as well as see what they made for their 5 min performance. While everyone was doing his or her performances I was in awe of how many interpretations of balance everyone thought of. I started to think that ours wasn't as good as the rests but in the end we were also congratulated for doing a good job and having great ideas.
The workshops that were provided all sounded interesting and I wanted to try them all, but I ended up choosing, acrobatics and stage combat for Thursday and dance and storytelling for Friday. Acrobatics was actually really hard and took a lot of body strength as well as flexibility. Stage combat was really fun and I learned a lot of new ways to fight without fighting.
Meeting my ensemble was exciting because this were the people that I would be working with extensively for the next 2 days. When we had our introductions and games I really liked the energy and positivity in the group.
Day 2 ISSEA drama
Today we had our excursion to monkey pools. I was fun seeing everyone's faces when they looked at the pools and the nature around. Exploring the pools was fun because I got to see places I've never seen before and when we met up with our ensembles we did a small activity using masks as a way of looking at nature with no past or future but in the now. This really helped us really pay attention to nature and look at the small details that we normally don't look in to. When we had our final workshop, I enjoyed myself. When we got back we had a final workshop. For me that was dance and storytelling. We got taught a simple African dance then dance while the storyteller told the tale. For me, this was a trip down memory lane. I recognized some of this move from when my uncles at weddings would dance. Towards the end of the day we met up with our ensembles and worked out what we were going to perform the next day and show what we learned from everything around us.
Day 3 ISSEA drama
This day was our crunch time. This was the day where we had to practically make up, write and refine our pieces for the night’s performance. We choose to work alone the lines of technology and nature because being teenagers we are all connected technologically some way. We incorporated the lion king with technology; this resulted in us making a comedy on “How to use Wi-Fi properly” when we had finished rehearsing and it was time to see the other performances before the night my group was very impressed and became shy and embarrassed to perform our piece. Everyone took the deep, emotional, abstract route to find balance, where as we poked fun and made everyone laugh by being silly. At the end of the night, judging from the audience feed back that I got, I found out that a lot of people liked our piece and rated it as one of the best out of the four.
Over all, the ISSEA drama and arts festival made me more aware and excited to learn about drama and all it’s simple yet amazing things that make it unique. All the drama chaperones that came were all sweet and crazy yet had so much knowledge to give to us about drama. They all had a unique position and perspective in drama and I learned so much more then I thought here was to learn. Meeting all the new people made a huge impact on my experience on working with people in a theatre production. Its so different working with people that you don’t know anything about rather then working with people you’ve been going to school with for the past few years. This experience for me has been amazing and will be an event in my life that I will always remember. I'm looking forward to next year’s ISSEA!
